What is our goal?

The goal is to design and build a model rocket that can autonomously land upright without a parachute, essentially a small scale version of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 or Blue Origin’s New Shepard.

Who are we?

We are Mason McGhee and Stephen Frianeza, mechanical engineers from UC Berkeley Class of 2016. Learn more about us here.

Why are we doing this?

We were looking for a challenging and exciting project where we could combine and apply the engineering concepts we have learned at Cal. As far as we know, no one has attempted this on the model-rocket scale, which will make for a difficult engineering challenge and an interesting learning experience.

Where is the project now?

We’ve designed and tested the controller to orient the rocket in flight. We are now in the process of building a full prototype and testing the controller to decelerate the rocket.
